A post-doctoral fellowship should do more than fulfill a licensure requirement. It should genuinely shape the kind of psychologist you become. At Old Town Psychology, our fellowship is designed to do exactly that, providing the clinical depth, specialized training, mentorship, and professional community that early-career psychologists need to move from competent to exceptional. We are a boutique, award-winning practice with a collaborative culture, a diverse and motivated client population, and a genuine commitment to the development of the clinicians who train here.
Why Train at Old Town Psychology?
We are not a traditional training site, and we do not offer a traditional fellowship experience. Old Town Psychology was built around the belief that the best psychologists are those who engage with the field in multiple ways: through clinical work, research, assessment, training, and outreach. That philosophy shapes everything about how we train.
Fellows at Old Town Psychology work alongside a collaborative team of doctoral-level psychologists, fellow postdocs, and supervised externs in a supportive, intellectually engaged environment. Caseloads are provided by the practice. Administrative and scheduling support is in place so fellows can focus on clinical work and professional development rather than logistics. And our office, in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, eight minutes from the King Street Metro, is a genuinely beautiful place to spend a training year.
Adult Track
Overview
The Adult Track is a full-time, 12-month fellowship focused on providing evidence-based therapy to adult clients across a range of presentations. Fellows in this track gain specialized clinical training in areas including couples counseling, trauma, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, with flexibility to tailor the training experience to individual clinical interests and career goals.
Clinical Work
Fellows carry a caseload of adult individual therapy clients, with opportunities to participate in group therapy, psychological and cognitive assessments, case consultations, and didactics. All clients are provided by the practice. Training is delivered in evidence-based treatment modalities, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and multicultural approaches to therapy.
Fellows also have the opportunity to learn and conduct psychological and cognitive assessments for ADHD, autism, learning disorders, and other psychological conditions. Previous assessment experience is preferred but not required.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal Adult Track fellow is an excellent therapist with strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build genuine and empathic therapeutic relationships, and a desire to be part of a collaborative, innovative team. This is a position for someone who wants to grow, clinically, professionally, and as a member of a practice community. The position has the potential to lead to a full-time staff role.
Requirements
- Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or School Psychology from an APA-accredited program
- Completion of a pre-doctoral internship at an APA-accredited internship site
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build accepting, genuine, and empathic therapeutic relationships
- Desire to be part of an innovative, collaborative team
Training and Supervision
Both fellowship tracks are built around a rigorous, structured training program that goes well beyond minimal supervision requirements. It includes:
- Individual supervision: Close, regular mentorship from senior doctoral-level (Ph.D.) psychologists at the practice
- Group supervision and didactics: Weekly group supervision, case presentations, and didactic training sessions
- Specialized training: Evidence-based modality training in ERP, ACT, and multicultural approaches, with track-specific specialization opportunities
- Professional development: Opportunities to contribute to practice research activities, write articles, blog posts, and other publications, and to participate in the broader intellectual life of the practice
What Our Patients Say
About Old Town Psychology
Old Town Psychology is a psychology practice built around the conviction that the best clinicians are those who engage with the field in multiple dimensions, including clinical work, research, assessment, training, and community outreach. We believe these roles strengthen one another, and that a psychologist who is only a therapist is a less complete clinician than one who also thinks, writes, researches, and trains.
Our practice is also inclusive and genuinely welcoming. We serve and employ people of all ages, races, ethnicities, cultures, national origins, sexual orientations, genders, religions, and abilities. Our environment is warm and collegial, our work is team-based, and our clinical culture is built on regular consultations, honest dialogue, and a shared commitment to doing this work well.
Fellows who join Old Town Psychology become part of a community that takes both their clients and their professional development seriously.
