Frequently Asked Questions

What types of therapy do you offer?

Our clinicians provide individual, couples, family, and group therapy using evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT, ACT, exposure and response prevention for OCD, and other research-supported methods. We treat anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, ADHD, stress and burnout, and life transitions across children, teens, and adults. During your consultation we will recommend the approach best suited to your goals.

How long does therapy take to work?

It varies by person and concern. Some clients feel meaningful relief within a few sessions, while deeper or longstanding issues may take several months of consistent work. Your therapist will set clear goals with you early on and review progress regularly so you always know how therapy is going and what to expect next.

How often will I have therapy sessions?

Most clients begin with weekly 50-minute sessions, which builds momentum and a strong working relationship. As you progress, many people move to every other week or monthly maintenance sessions. Your therapist will tailor the frequency to your needs and adjust it over time.

Do you offer therapy for children and teens?

Yes. Several of our clinicians specialize in working with children and adolescents, using age-appropriate, engaging approaches and partnering with parents throughout the process. We treat childhood anxiety, behavioral challenges, ADHD, depression, and the social and emotional pressures teens face today.

Will my therapy sessions be confidential?

Yes. What you share in therapy is protected by law, with only narrow exceptions related to safety. As a private-pay practice, we are not required to disclose your records or diagnoses to an insurer, which gives you added privacy. Your therapist will review how confidentiality works at your first session.

Can therapy be done online?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth therapy across Virginia and 41 other states (via PSYPACT) in addition to in-person sessions at our Old Town Alexandria office. Many clients combine the two — meeting in person when convenient and virtually when travel or scheduling makes that easier.

Do I need a diagnosis or a referral to start therapy?

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis or a physician referral to begin therapy with us. You can reach out directly, and during your consultation we will clarify your goals and match you with the right clinician.

How is therapy different from a psychological assessment?

Therapy is an ongoing process focused on improving how you feel, think, and function, while an assessment is a time-limited evaluation that answers a diagnostic question. Some clients pursue both — an assessment to understand what is going on, then therapy to address it. We can help you decide which is the right starting point.
