Sometimes the most important conversation you can have is the one you have never been able to have anywhere else. Individual therapy offers something rare: a dedicated, confidential space that is entirely yours, with a skilled clinician whose sole focus is helping you understand yourself more clearly, navigate difficulties, and build a life that feels more like the one you want to be living.
Whether you are facing a specific challenge, carrying something you have held alone for too long, or simply sensing that something needs to change, individual therapy is one of the most meaningful investments you can make in yourself. At Old Town Psychology, we provide expert, personalized individual therapy for children, teens, and adults in Alexandria, VA, with immediate openings.
What Is Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy is a structured, one-on-one process in which you work with a trained clinician to address the emotional, psychological, behavioral, or relational challenges that are affecting your well-being and quality of life. Sessions are private, confidential, and built entirely around you, including your history, your goals, and the specific concerns you bring to the room.
At Old Town Psychology, our therapists use evidence-based approaches rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and mindfulness-based methods, selected and integrated based on what the research shows works for your specific presenting concerns. This means your treatment is clinically grounded, not generic. You will not receive a one-size-fits-all approach because no two people, and no two challenges, are the same.
Effective individual therapy also does more than reduce symptoms. It helps you develop genuine insight into the patterns that have shaped your experience, build practical skills for managing emotions and relationships, and make the kinds of lasting changes that improve not just how you feel, but how you live.
Conditions Individual Therapy Can Help With

As a full-lifespan, one-stop practice, we also offer comprehensive psychological assessments, group therapy, couples counseling, parent coaching, and specialized programs, so if your needs evolve or extend beyond individual therapy, we are equipped to support you without requiring you to start over somewhere new.
Who Is Individual Therapy For?
Individual therapy is for anyone who is ready to invest in their own well-being, whether they are in acute distress, navigating a difficult transition, managing a long-standing challenge, or simply motivated to grow and function at a higher level. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. You just need to be willing to show up and do the work.
Individual therapy at Old Town Psychology may be a strong fit if you:
- Are struggling with persistent anxiety, depression, stress, or emotional overwhelm
- Are going through a significant life transition and need support finding your footing
- Feel stuck in patterns, emotionally, behaviorally, or relationally, that are not serving you
- Want to understand yourself better and develop healthier ways of thinking and responding
- Are dealing with a specific challenge such as OCD, ADHD, trauma, grief, or relationship difficulties

What Does Individual Therapy Look Like?
Starting therapy is a significant step, and we want you to know exactly what to expect from the moment you reach out. Here is how the process works at Old Town Psychology:
Free Initial Consultation
Before committing to anything, you are invited to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation with our clinical coordinator. This is an informal conversation and an opportunity for you to share what you are hoping to get out of therapy, ask any questions you have, and get a sense of whether Old Town Psychology feels like the right fit. There is no pressure and no obligation.
Your First Session
Your first appointment is a 50-minute intake session, available either in person at our Alexandria, VA office or remotely via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video portal. During this session, your therapist will take time to understand your personal history, your current circumstances, and your goals. Together, you will begin to shape a treatment approach that makes sense for your specific situation. You will also complete standard intake paperwork, including consent forms, during this visit.
Ongoing Therapy
Most people have a clear sense of whether they want to continue after two sessions. From there, the pace and duration of therapy are entirely tailored to your needs and preferences. Some people work toward a specific goal and complete therapy in a focused, short-term engagement. Others benefit from longer-term support as they work through more complex or layered concerns. There is no predetermined timeline, and you are always free to conclude therapy when you feel ready.
Throughout the process, your therapist will draw on evidence-based techniques from CBT, interpersonal therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches, helping you build practical coping skills, develop healthier relationship patterns, and cultivate a deeper, more accurate understanding of yourself. The goal is not just to help you feel better in the short term, but to give you the tools and insight to sustain that progress long after therapy ends.
"We brought our daughter in for testing and the OTP team was amazing. They were so kind, caring and great with children. My daughter is shy and takes a little time to warm up when first meeting someone new. The Doctor was patient and encouraging and my daughter had a wonderful time. They also provide fast results and meet with you to explain everything in the report. I would definitely recommend them."
"Very prompt response to our inquiry. Welcoming environment and very professional, thorough communication. The staff genuinely seems to care that your needs are met."
"Excellent service, knowledgeable staff, incredible responsiveness, diligence and follow through -- we feel lucky we found such a great therapy practice. We cannot recommend them highly enough!"
“My daughter took WISC-V test there and we are very pleased with our experience. They are professional, patient and wonderful throughout the entire process. My daughter had such a great time that she hardly felt that was a test - she even asked when she could take it again. I would highly recommend them to whoever needs child IQ testing services.”
“I took my children here for TAG testing. Both of my kids actually enjoyed their assessments. I was very pleased with the time and care taken to assess my children, the thoroughness of the report, and the fact that there was a follow-up session to discuss any questions that I had relative to the assessment included. Also-- the tea selection in the waiting room is top tier :)”
