Adoption is one of the most profound decisions a family can make. It’s a commitment to love, raise, and advocate for a child for the rest of your life. It is also a process that requires careful preparation, professional documentation, and, in most cases, a formal psychological evaluation as part of the home study or agency requirements.

An adoption qualification evaluation is not an obstacle to becoming a parent. It is a structured, professional process designed to ensure that prospective adoptive parents are psychologically prepared, fully informed, and entering the journey with the clarity and resilience it deserves. At Old Town Psychology, we provide expert adoption psychological evaluations, also called pre-adoption mental health assessments or adoption home study psychological clearances, for prospective adoptive parents. We have immediate availability, so the evaluation process will not slow down your path to parenthood.

What Is an Adoption Qualification Evaluation?

An adoption qualification evaluation is a formal psychological assessment conducted by a licensed psychologist that evaluates the mental health, emotional readiness, and overall suitability of prospective adoptive parents. It is a required component of most domestic and international adoption processes, mandated by adoption agencies, home study providers, and, in many cases, by the child welfare regulations of the relevant jurisdiction or country.

The purpose of the evaluation is not to create barriers. It is to provide the adoption agency, home study evaluator, or placement authority with a professional clinical opinion that the prospective parent or parents are psychologically stable, emotionally prepared for the demands of adoptive parenting, and equipped to provide a safe, nurturing, and supportive home environment for a child.

Beyond its role as a required document, a well-conducted adoption evaluation is genuinely valuable for the prospective parents themselves. It provides a structured opportunity to reflect on motivations, examine expectations honestly, and prepare for the emotional and relational dimensions of the adoption journey, including the unique challenges that may arise when raising a child who has experienced early adversity, loss, or trauma.

At Old Town Psychology, our evaluations are conducted by licensed psychologists with experience in adoption-related psychological assessment and familiarity with the requirements of domestic, international, and foster-to-adopt processes. Reports are prepared to meet the standards of adoption agencies, home study providers, and placing authorities.

What Can an Adoption Qualification Evaluation Help With?

An adoption psychological evaluation explores the full range of factors that bear on a prospective parent’s readiness and suitability for adoptive parenthood. At Old Town Psychology, our evaluation addresses:

Mental health history and emotional stability:

The evaluation provides a thorough clinical assessment of current mental health functioning and relevant mental health history. For individuals with a history of mental health treatment, the evaluation examines how conditions have been managed, what supports are in place, and whether current functioning is stable and consistent with the demands of parenting. A mental health history does not automatically disqualify a prospective parent; what matters is the current clinical picture and the resources and insight the individual brings.

Motivation for pursuing adoption:

Understanding why a prospective parent is choosing adoption, and being honest with themselves about that motivation, is an important dimension of readiness. The evaluation provides a space to explore and articulate motivation clearly, which benefits both the assessment process and the prospective parent’s own self-understanding.

Relationship dynamics and family environment:

For couples, the evaluation examines the quality and stability of the relationship, how the couple communicates and navigates conflict, and whether they are genuinely aligned in their commitment to adoption and their expectations for parenthood. For single prospective parents, it explores the relational support structures that will sustain both the parent and the child.

Understanding of the adoption process and its unique challenges:

Adoptive parenting involves dimensions that biological parenting does not, including questions of identity, attachment, disclosure, grief, and the potential effects of early adversity or trauma on a child’s development. The evaluation assesses the degree to which prospective parents understand these dimensions and are prepared to address them thoughtfully.

Coping skills, stress management, and support systems:

Parenting is demanding under any circumstances. Adoptive parenting can bring additional layers of complexity. The evaluation examines how prospective parents manage stress, access support, regulate their own emotions, and draw on the resources around them, all of which bear directly on their capacity to provide a stable, nurturing environment for a child.

What Our Patients Say

"We brought our daughter in for testing and the OTP team was amazing. They were so kind, caring and great with children. My daughter is shy and takes a little time to warm up when first meeting someone new. The Doctor was patient and encouraging and my daughter had a wonderful time. They also provide fast results and meet with you to explain everything in the report. I would definitely recommend them."

"Very prompt response to our inquiry. Welcoming environment and very professional, thorough communication. The staff genuinely seems to care that your needs are met."

"Excellent service, knowledgeable staff, incredible responsiveness, diligence and follow through -- we feel lucky we found such a great therapy practice. We cannot recommend them highly enough!"

“My daughter took WISC-V test there and we are very pleased with our experience. They are professional, patient and wonderful throughout the entire process. My daughter had such a great time that she hardly felt that was a test - she even asked when she could take it again. I would highly recommend them to whoever needs child IQ testing services.”

“I took my children here for TAG testing. Both of my kids actually enjoyed their assessments. I was very pleased with the time and care taken to assess my children, the thoroughness of the report, and the fact that there was a follow-up session to discuss any questions that I had relative to the assessment included. Also-- the tea selection in the waiting room is top tier :)”

What Does an Adoption Qualification Evaluation Look Like?

At Old Town Psychology, adoption qualification evaluations are conducted with the clinical rigor and personal care that a decision of this magnitude deserves. Evaluations are available in person at our Alexandria, VA office or via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video portal, offering flexibility for clients across the region.

Clinical Interview

The evaluation centers on a comprehensive one-on-one clinical interview or, for couples, a joint interview with individual components, conducted by one of our licensed psychologists. The interview covers personal and family history, mental health background, relationship history and dynamics, motivation for adoption, understanding of the process and its demands, parenting philosophy and experience, and the specific circumstances of the planned adoption (domestic, international, infant, older child, foster-to-adopt, etc.). For couples, both partners are typically interviewed together and individually to provide a complete relational picture.

Psychological Testing

The clinical interview is complemented by validated psychological assessment measures that provide a standardized, objective view of mental health functioning and personality characteristics. These instruments are selected based on the requirements of the relevant agency or home study provider and the clinical questions the evaluation is designed to address.

Comprehensive Report

Following the evaluation, we prepare a formal written report documenting the clinical findings, addressing the specific criteria required by the adoption agency, home study provider, or placing authority, and providing a professional opinion regarding psychological suitability. Reports are formatted to meet the documentation standards of the relevant organization and are delivered promptly to keep the adoption timeline moving forward.

Feedback Session

We provide a dedicated feedback conversation following the evaluation so that prospective parents fully understand what was assessed, what the report contains, and how to move forward. For individuals or couples who want ongoing psychological support during the adoption process or after placement, our therapy and counseling services are available as a natural extension of the evaluation.

Take the Next Step

The adoption process asks a great deal of prospective parents, and a psychological evaluation is one of the most important steps in that process. At Old Town Psychology, we approach every evaluation with clinical expertise, genuine respect for the significance of what you are undertaking, and a commitment to completing the process efficiently so it does not slow your path to parenthood.
