Are You Feeling Burned Out at Work?
Are you feeling overwhelmed or tired by your current work-life balance? If so, you might be burned out. Burnout is a state of prolonged physical and psychological exhaustion.
While burnout can be caused by a number of things, most people experience it in the context of work. As many as 77% of people experience burnout at some point in their career*, and COVID has likely made things worse.
What are Signs You have Burnout?
Burnout can happen to anyone and can come with a number of different symptoms. You may be burned out if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions:
● Is your work emotionally exhausting?
● Do you feel that every working hour is tiring for you?
● Do you feel like you never have enough energy for family and friends during leisure time?
● Do you increasingly talk about your work in a negative way?
● After work, do you tend to need more time than in the past to relax and feel better?
● Are you exhausted in the morning at the thought of another day at work?
● Do you find yourself doing your job mechanically?
● Is it harder to become motivated to attend work or finish work tasks?
● Do you feel helpless, trapped, or defeated when thinking about your work?
● Do you feel that your work is not satisfying and/or meaningful to you?
Different Types of Burnout
Burnout can look different for everyone, however, there are three main types of burnout:
Overload burnout: When you feel that your work demands are too much or too hard. You may feel like you’re stretched too thin and aren’t able to keep up with everything.
Under-challenge burnout: When you feel bored or unmotivated by your work. This might occur because you feel like your work isn’t noticed or appreciated or if you’re in a “dead-end” job.
Neglect burnout: When you feel helpless, uncertain, and frustrated because you don’t know what’s expected of you. As a result, you may feel incompetent and unmotivated to do your work.
