What Our Patients Say

qout-icon

"We brought our daughter in for testing and the OTP team was amazing. They were so kind, caring and great with children. My daughter is shy and takes a little time to warm up when first meeting someone new. The Doctor was patient and encouraging and my daughter had a wonderful time. They also provide fast results and meet with you to explain everything in the report. I would definitely recommend them."

"Very prompt response to our inquiry. Welcoming environment and very professional, thorough communication. The staff genuinely seems to care that your needs are met."

"Excellent service, knowledgeable staff, incredible responsiveness, diligence and follow through -- we feel lucky we found such a great therapy practice. We cannot recommend them highly enough!"

“My daughter took WISC-V test there and we are very pleased with our experience. They are professional, patient and wonderful throughout the entire process. My daughter had such a great time that she hardly felt that was a test - she even asked when she could take it again. I would highly recommend them to whoever needs child IQ testing services.”

“I took my children here for TAG testing. Both of my kids actually enjoyed their assessments. I was very pleased with the time and care taken to assess my children, the thoroughness of the report, and the fact that there was a follow-up session to discuss any questions that I had relative to the assessment included. Also-- the tea selection in the waiting room is top tier :)”

NEED MORE INFORMATION?

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Most new clients are seen within one to two weeks, not the months-long waits common at larger practices. Our intake coordinators can match you with the right clinician quickly and often schedule a first appointment within days of your call. If you have an urgent need, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you sooner.

Do you work with kids, or mostly adults?

Both. Our doctoral-level psychologists and licensed clinicians work across the entire lifespan — children, teens, adults, couples, and families. Some of our team specialize in early childhood and pediatric care, while others focus on adult therapy, assessment, and couples work. When you reach out, we will pair you with a highly-experienced clinician whose training fits your age and your specific concern.

How do I know which clinician is the right fit?

Fit matters, and we take it seriously. During your initial consultation we learn about your goals, history, and preferences, then match you with a clinician whose specialty and style align with what you need. If the match is not right after your first sessions, we will gladly help you transition to another member of our team at no penalty.

How do I know if my child needs therapy or a psychological assessment?

Therapy helps with managing emotions, behavior, relationships, and stress, while a psychological assessment answers diagnostic questions — for example, whether your child has ADHD, autism, a learning disorder, or a specific area (IQ) of cognitive strength or difficulty. If you are unsure which path fits, our intake team can talk it through with you and recommend the right starting point. Often families begin with a consultation and decide from there.

Do you take insurance, and how does private-pay billing work?

Old Town Psychology is a private-pay (out-of-network) practice, which lets us protect your privacy and spend our time on your care rather than insurance paperwork. We provide a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Our intake team is happy to explain fees, payment options, and how to check your out-of-network benefits before you begin.

What conditions and concerns do your clinicians treat?

Our team treats a broad range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, grief, ADHD, stress and burnout, life transitions, and relationship difficulties. We also provide specialized couples and family work, parent coaching, and comprehensive assessments for IQ, ADHD, autism, learning disorders, giftedness, and memory. If you are not sure whether we can help with your situation, reach out — we will tell you honestly and refer you elsewhere if another setting is a better fit.

Do you offer telehealth, or are sessions only in person?

We offer both. Many clients are seen in person at our office on King Street in Old Town Alexandria, and we also provide secure telehealth appointments for therapy and consultations across Virginia. Certain assessments and evaluations require in-person testing, and our team will let you know which parts of your care can be done virtually when you schedule.

What is a psychological or neuropsychological assessment, and what should I expect?

An assessment is a structured, evidence-based process that uses interviews, standardized testing, and questionnaires to answer specific diagnostic and learning questions. It typically involves an intake interview, one or more testing sessions, and a feedback session where your psychologist walks you through the results and a clear set of recommendations. You receive a written report you can share with schools, physicians, or employers as needed.

Is everything I share kept confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is foundational to psychological care, and your privacy is protected by law with only narrow, legally required exceptions involving safety. As a private-pay practice, we are not required to share your records or diagnoses with an insurance company, which gives you an additional layer of discretion. Your clinician will review exactly how confidentiality works during your first visit.

How do I get started with Old Town Psychology?
