Life Coaching and therapy for life transitions at Old Town Psychology

Have you ever stopped and wondered why you were living the life you’re living? Wondering what it was all for? If you don’t know the answer, or don’t like the answer, you’re not alone. Many people start down a path only to realize it’s not what they wanted or what they thought it was going to be. We all want meaning in our lives and, when we don’t have it, it can feel very empty and unsatisfying. Do you feel like you’re just going through the motions? Life coaching can help you find the meaning you’re seeking and make the changes you want in your life.

Sometimes life changes are planned and welcome. Other times, they’re upsetting surprises. Either way, life transitions are the changes we go through when we leave the old and familiar for the new and uncertain. These new phases of life often come with challenges, disruption, fear, and vulnerability. In addition, transitioning to a new phase of life always involves a loss – loss of a role, a person, a place, or your old self or life. Loss can bring a mix of emotions and it is normal to feel a sense of grief, stress, or anxiety. Even life transitions that are planned or positive, such as getting married, can be challenging in their own ways.

There are many different types of life transitions, including:

  • Starting or ending school

  • Changing jobs/careers

  • Retirement

  • Getting married

  • Becoming a parent

  • Divorce or breakups

  • Moving

  • Financial changes

  • Serious illness

  • Accidents

  • Significant loss (of a person, job, pet, or anything important)

What are Signs that I would Benefit from Life Coaching?

Whether you want to make a change in your life, or you’re already in the midst of a life transition, the process can often be stressful. Stress isn’t always a bad thing, but intense or chronic stress can be harmful. People often experience a range of psychological and physical symptoms. You may benefit from therapy or life coaching if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions:

  • Do you feel lost or just not like yourself?

  • Do you feel like you’re just going through the motions?

  • Are you feeling burned out?

  • Are you currently unsatisfied with your life?

  • Do you feel a loss of confidence?

  • Are you afraid to move forward?

  • Do you feel unprepared to handle the future?

  • Are you regularly experiencing negative emotions (anger, anxiety, doubt, grief, confusion, numbness)?

  • Are you regularly experiencing physical symptoms, such as fatigues, headaches, upset stomach, or muscle tension?

Therapy can provide a supportive environment to help you create the kind of life you want and move through a life transition.

How Does Treatment Work?

  • Identify your values and life goals to guide your path forward.

  • Develop skills to cope with any challenges you face.

  • Process any feelings of loss or fear that you feel.

  • Build a plan to take manageable steps towards your future.

By the end of our work together, you will have a better idea of what you want out of life and the confidence to move forward.
