Externship Program
2025-2026
Old Town Psychology offers a 12-month externship where students have the opportunity to conduct both therapy and cognitive assessments with children, adolescents, and adults in a private practice setting. Externs also have the opportunity to receive specialized training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Mindfulness-Based Interventions, and multicultural approaches. Students receive compensation as part of the externship.
Our externs are able to provide long-term therapy to clients presenting with a variety of concerns including depression, anxiety, OCD, adjustment issues, trauma, grief and loss, stress, and relationship issues. Externs also have the opportunity to administer cognitive assessments, including intelligence tests, achievement tests, learning disorder assessments, and ADHD assessments, write testing reports, and conduct feedback sessions with clients. Our supervisors are Ph.D level psychologists who integrate Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), multiculturalism, and interpersonal approaches.
Opportunity Details
Externs are expected to carry a caseload of approximately 6-8 therapy clients per week and 2-3 testing cases per month.
Externs receive compensation.
Externs are required to be on-site 8-16 hours a week. Strong preference will be given to externs who can be on-site for two full days (16 hours) a week.
Externs are required to attend (in-person or virtual) weekly group supervision/didactics at 11am on Thursdays.
Externship includes weekly individual supervision in accordance with DC Externship Consortium guidelines.
Externship Dates: May/June 2025 to May/June 2026.
Office is metro accessible.
Requirements
Doctoral student in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology APA-accredited Program.
Must have obtained a Master's degree by the start of externship.
Must have completed at least one year of clinical practicum.
