Facts to Consider

What do IQ tests measure?

IQ tests provide an overall measure of an individual’s cognitive abilities. This means that the tests measure your ability to learn rather than how much you know about a specific topic. Often IQ tests also provides scores for different areas of cognitive functioning. For example, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) provides measures cognitive functioning in the areas of verbal comprehension, visual spatial, working memory, fluid reasoning, and processing speed.

What’s the average IQ score?

Tests like the WISC-V and the WPPSI have an average score of 100. Ninety-five percent of the population have IQ scores that fall between 70 and 130.

Can I improve my IQ score?

Yes. IQ scores are not fixed and they fluctuate greatly during childhood and adolescence. IQ becomes more set with age, therefore, early intervention is especially important for improving cognitive abilities. Improving IQ isn’t so much about making people “smarter” but about using what you have more efficiently and effectively.
